Foreword
This Standard is revised based on ISO 9717.1990 Method for specifying
phosphate conversion coatings for metals. It is equivalent with the International
Standard in technical content. The writing rules comply with GB/T 1.1-1993.
According to the provisions and format of GB/T 1.1-1993, this Standard added
the foreword and “Introduction” of ISO 9719. In the specific technical details of
the Standard, it listed Clause 4 “Coating forming method” of GB 11376-89 into
the annex of this Standard. It also added Clause 8 “Heat treatment after
phosphating” and Clause 9 “Post-processing”. In normative references, it added
GB 12609-90 Electrodeposited metallic coatings and related finishes-Sampling
procedures for inspection by attributes.
Since the date of implementation of this Standard, it replaces GB 11376-89
Metal phosphate conversion coating.
Annex A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, J of this Standard are informative.
This Standard was proposed by Ministry of Machinery Industry of the People 's
Republic of China.
This Standard shall be under the jurisdiction of National Technical Committee
on Metallic and Non-metallic Coatings of Standardization Administration of
China.
The drafting organization of this Standard. Wuhan Institute of Materials
Protection, Ministry of Machinery Industry.

This Standard was issued in June 1989 for the first time.
Phosphate conversion coatings for metals
Introduction
Phosphate conversion coatings are used in ferrous metals, aluminum, zinc,
cadmium and their alloys. It can not only be used as the final finishing layer, but
also as other layers of the middle layer. Its roles are as follows.
a) enhance corrosion resistance;
b) improve the adhesion between the substrate and the coating or other
organic finishing layer;
c) improve the cold processing properties of materials, such as drawing,
drawing, extrusion, etc.;
d) improve the surface friction properties to promote its sliding.
The main process overview guidelines are given in Annex A (informative). See
Annexes B, C, D, E (informative) for each end-use membrane and post-
treatment recommendations.
1 Scope
This Standard describes a method of specifying requirements for phosphate
conversion coatings, intended primarily for application to ferrous metals,
aluminium, zinc, cadmium and their alloys.
2 Normative references
The following standards contain the provisions which, through reference in this
Standard, constitute the provisions of this Standard. At the time of publication,
the editions indicated were valid. All standards are subject to revision, and
parties to agreements based on this Standard are encouraged to investigate
the possibility of applying the most recent editions of the standards indicated
below.
GB/T 9792-88 Coatings on metallic materials - Determination of coating
mass per unit area - Gravimetric methods (eqv ISO 3892.1980);
GB 12609-90 Electrodeposited metallic coatings and related finishes -
Sampling procedures for inspection by attributes (eqv ISO 4519.1980);
the coating by rubbing with a rubber squeegee. Using the appropriate analytical
instrument (J.2.3.1), detect which of the elements, phosphorus, manganese,
zinc and calcium, are present in the test solution.
J.3 Method 2
As an alternative to method 1 (clause J.2) a scanning electron microscope
equipped for Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) may be used for the direct
detection of metal elements in the coating.
J.4 Interpretation of results
Taking account of the elements detected, identify the types of coating in
accordance with Table J.1. For ferrous basis materials, the absence of
manganese or zinc in the conversion coating indicates almost certainly that the
coating consists of iron(II) phosphate.
