Foreword
This Document was drafted as per the rules specified in GB/T 1.1-2020 Directives for
Standardization – Part 1: Rules for the Structure and Drafting of Standardizing Documents.
This Document is Part 2 of GB/T 1040 Plastics – Determination of Tensile Properties, which
has published the following parts:
--- Part 1: General Principles;

Composites;
--- Part 5: Test Conditions for Unidirectional Fiber-Reinforced Plastic Composites.
This Document replaced GB/T 1040.2-2006 Plastics - Determination of Tensile Properties -
Part 2: Test Conditions for Moulding and Extrusion Plastics. Compared with GB/T 1040.2-
2006, the major technical changes are as follows besides the structural adjustments and editorial
modifications:
--- Add the 75mm gauge length of the specimen (see 5.2 of this Edition);
--- Add the requirements for the accuracy of the extensometer when using different gauge
lengths to determine the modulus (see 5.2 of this Edition);
--- Add the inter-lab precision data in China (see B.3 of this Edition).
This Document modified and adopts ISO 527-2:2012 Plastics – Determination of Tensile
Properties – Part 2: Test Conditions for Mouilding and Extrusion Plastics.
The major technical differences and their causes between this Document and ISO 527-2:2012
are as follows:
--- For the Normative References, this Document has made adjustments with technical
differences to adapt to the technical conditions of China. The adjustments are reflected
in Clause 2 “Normative References”. The specific adjustments are as follows:
Use GB/T 1040.1-2018 that equivalently adopts the international standard to replace
ISO 527-1:2012;
Use GB/T 5471 that equivalently adopts the international standard to replace ISO
295;
Use GB/T 9352 that equivalently adopts the international standard to replace ISO
293;
Use GB/T 17037.1 that modifies and adopts the international standard to replace
ISO 291-1;
Use GB/T 37426 that modifies and adopts the international standard to replace ISO
20753;
Use GB/T 39812 that equivalently adopts the international standard to replace ISO
2818.
--- Add the requirements for the accuracy of the extensometer when using different gauge
lengths to determine the modulus (see 5.2 of this Document), which is consistent with
ISO 527-1:2019.
--- Add the inter-lab precision data in China as the content of B.3, so that adapt to the actual
situation of China.
This Document made the following editorial modifications:
--- Adjust the precision data in Tables B.1 ~ B.4 of Annex B in ISO 527-2:2012 to Tables
B.6~B.9.

Plastics – Determination of Tensile Properties – Part 2: Test
Conditions for Moulding and Extrusion Plastics
1 Scope
This Document specifies the test conditions for determining the tensile properties of moulding
and extrusion plastics, based upon the general principles given in GB/T 1040.1.
This Document is applicable to the following range of materials:
— rigid and semi-rigid thermoplastics moulding, extrusion and cast materials, including
compounds filled and reinforced by, for example, short fibers, small rods, plates or
granules but excluding textile fibers (see GB/T 1040.4 and GB/T 1040.5). See GB/T
1040.1-2018, Clause 3 for the definition of “rigid” and “semi-rigid”.
— rigid and semi-rigid thermosetting moulding and cast materials, including filled and
reinforced compounds but excluding textile fibers as reinforcement (see GB/T 1040.4
and GB/T 1040.5);
— thermotropic liquid crystal polymers.
This Document is not normally suitable for use with rigid cellular materials or sandwich
structures containing cellular material. For rigid cellular materials see GB/T 9641.
This Document is not suitable for flexible films and sheets, of thickness smaller than 1 mm, see
GB/T 1040.3.
This Document applied using specimens which may be either moulded to the chosen
dimensions or machined, cut or punched from injection‑ or compression‑moulded plates. The
multipurpose test specimen is preferred (see GB/T 37426).
2 Normative References
The provisions in following documents become the essential provisions of this Document
through reference in this Document. For the dated documents, only the versions with the dates
indicated are applicable to this Document; for the undated documents, only the latest version
(including all the amendments) is applicable to this Document.
GB/T 1040.1-2018 Plastics - Determination of Tensile Properties - Part 1: General
Principles (ISO 527-1:2012, IDT)
Increasing the gauge length leads to higher accuracy, especially for the modulus determination.
For a gauge length of 75mm, the accuracy required for modulus determination is ±1% and the
absolute accuracy of the elongation is ±1.5μm; the absolute accuracy of the elongation
measurement for a gauge length of 50mm and below is ±1μm. This means that the accuracy of
the extensometer is relaxed when the gauge length of 75mm is used compared with the gauge
length of 50mm and below. In addition, the frequency of necking outside the gauge length will
be reduced.
5.3 Recording of data
See GB/T 1040.1-2018, 5.1.6.
NOTE: For the determination of the tensile modulus under the conditions v = 1mm/min, L0 = 75mm, L
= 115 mm and r = 0.000 5 mm, the recording frequency for the strain signal greater than or equal to 22
s-1 would be appropriate according to GB/T 1041.1-2018, Equation 1. This frequency increases as the
gauge length increases. With larger gauge length the absolute elongation measured by the extensometer
is larger for the same crosshead displacement, i.e., the recording instrument will see more data points in
the same time span.
6 Test Specimens
6.1 Shape and dimensions
Wherever possible, the test specimens shall be dumb-bell-shaped types 1A and 1B, as shown
in Figure 1 and Table 1. Type 1A shall be used for directly injection-moulded multipurpose test
specimens, type 1B for machined specimens. Type 1A may also be used for compression-
moulded specimens. For the use of proportionally scaled miniaturized specimens, see Annex A
and/or GB/T 37426.
NOTE 1: At 4 mm thickness, specimen types 1A and 1B are identical to the multipurpose test specimens
according to GB/T 11997, types A and B, respectively, and to types A1 and A2 of GB/T 37426.
For purposes where large numbers of test specimens are to be exposed in limited space, for
example, during analysis of environmental influences due to radiation, heat and/or chemicals
(see GB/T 37188.3), small test specimens of type C of GB/T 37426 can be used. In such cases,
frequently only the relative change of strength is of interest, and specimens of type CW are
particularly useful. To accommodate wall thicknesses of the final application, thicknesses
different from those preferred in GB/T 37426 may be used.
NOTE 2: Other miniaturized specimens with different scale factors are defined in GB/T 37426.
6.2 Preparation of test specimens
Test specimens shall be either directly injection- or compression-moulded from the material in
accordance with GB/T 9352, GB/T 17037.1, GB/T 5471 or ISO 10724-1, as appropriate, or
