Part 1: Strength and Durability of Tables
1 Scope
This Part of GB/T 10357 stipulates the test method of strength and durability of tables.
This Part is applicable to various table furniture used in households, hotels and
restaurants, etc.
2 Normative References
The following documents are indispensable to the application of this document. In
terms of references with a specified date, only versions with a specified date are
applicable to this document. In terms of references without a specified date, the latest
version (including all the modifications) is applicable to this document.

3 General Test Conditions
3.1 Test Piece
Test piece shall be fully assembled finished products for exit-factory and comply with
the requirements of the product design drawings.
Disassembled furniture shall be fully assembled in accordance with the requirements
of the drawings. If there are several combinations of combined furniture, then, test
piece shall be assembled in the most unfavorable way for the strength and durability
If the manufacturer does not provide furniture installation or assembly instructions, then,
at the time of test, the mode of assembly must be recorded in the test report.
Before the test, all the hardware connectors shall be firmly installed. During the test,
they cannot be tightened again, unless the manufacturer has special requirements.
In terms of test piece made by the method of glue connection, after it is made and
before the test is conducted, the test piece shall at least be continuously stored in the
indoor environment for 7 d, then, be tested.
3.2 Test Environment
The temperature of standard test environment is 15 °C ~ 25 °C; the relative humidity
is 40% ~ 70%.
3.3 Loading Requirements
During the static load strength test, the loading speed shall be as slow as possible, so
as to ensure that the additional dynamic load is so small that it can be neglected.
During the durability test, the loading speed shall be slow, so as to ensure that the test
piece does not have dynamic heating.
3.4 Loading Requirements for Non-tested Push-pull Members
Unless it is otherwise specified, during the test, all the non-tested push-pull members
of test piece need to be evenly loaded. The loading requirements shall comply with
Table 1 of GB/T 10357.5-2011.
3.5 Requirements for Test Process
Test piece shall receive various tests in accordance with the test procedures specified
in this Part. The durability test may be respectively conducted on different test pieces.
The strength test shall be conducted on the same test piece.
If due to the special structure of test piece, the test procedures cannot be abided by,
then, the test shall be conducted as far as possible in accordance with the test
procedures specified in this Part. Moreover, relevant differences shall be recorded in
the test report.
If product’s service life needs to be determined, the test shall pass each test level step
by step, until the test piece is destroyed.
If whether the mechanical properties of the product meet the specified requirements
needs to be checked, the test may be directly conducted in accordance with the test
level of corresponding level.
3.6 Accuracy
Unless it is otherwise specified, when the size is less than 1 m, the dimensional
measurement deviation is ± 0.5 mm; when the size is greater than, or equals to 1 m,
the dimensional measurement shall be accurate to ± 1 mm. The measurement of force
shall be accurate to ± 5%. The measurement of mass shall be accurate to ± 1%. The
measurement of angle shall be accurate to ± 2°. The position error of loading pad is ±
5 mm.
4 Test Equipment
4.1 Loading Equipment
4.1.1 Loading equipment used in the test shall be able to ensure correct loading of the
test piece.
4.1.2 Loading equipment can provide a vertical or horizontal loading force, which can
be given, or, gradually increased. This equipment shall not hinder the movement of the
test piece. If necessary, the force generated by the horizontal loading equipment shall
be able to tilt at an angle to the horizontal line.
4.2 Loading Pad
Loading pad is a rigid flat circular object with a diameter of 100 mm, and the radius of
the circumference of its loading surface is 12 mm. When loading, the mass of the
loading pad shall be included in the calculation.
4.3 Load
Load is standard weights or calibrated metal blocks. If a fabric bag containing lead
balls is used, the fabric bag shall be divided into small blocks, so as to avoid the
movement of the lead balls during the test. If metal blocks are used, the front row of
metal blocks shall be flush with the front edge of the surface of the test piece.
4.4 Stopper
Stopper is a device used to prevent the test piece from moving, but it cannot limit the
tilting of the test piece. Its height shall be not more than 12 mm. If due to the special
structure of the test piece, higher dimensions are allowed to be used, but the maximum
height should be just enough to prevent the test piece from moving. When the height
of the stopper is more than 12 mm, the actual height of the stopper needs to be
recorded in the report.
4.5 Impactor
Impactor is composed of three parts: cylinder, spiral compression spring assembly and
impact head.
The diameter of the cylinder is 200 mm. It is connected to the impact head through a
spiral compression spring assembly. In addition, it can make relative movement along
the axis of the impact head (center area).
The mass of the cylinder, plus related accessories (excluding spring), is (17 ± 0.1) kg;
the mass of the entire impactor (including the spiral compression spring assembly and
the impact head) is (25 ± 0.1) kg.

In accordance with the force specified in Table 1, evenly load on the tabletop for 7 d.
Before loading and 7 days after loading, and while it is still not unloaded, measure the
deflection value of the tabletop. In addition, in accordance with the percentage of the
span between the two supports, record the deflection value. The deflection value shall
be accurate to 0.1.
After the test is finished, check the overall structure of the table. In addition, in
accordance with the stipulations of Chapter 6, assess the defects.
5.1.2 Horizontal static load test
Height-adjustable test piece shall be adjusted to the highest position.
Use a stopper to surround the table leg on the side where the horizontal force is applied.
If the table is equipped with casters, use a stopper to restrict the movement of the
caster. Evenly apply the balanced load onto the tabletop. The mass of the load shall
be just enough to prevent the table from tipping over during the test, but the maximum
mass cannot exceed 100 kg. Then, apply the force specified in Table 1 onto the central
vertical line connecting to the legs on one side.
When the tabletop is rectangular, as it is shown in Figure 4 a), use a stopper to
surround Leg 1 and Leg 2; the horizontal load is applied in the direction of a;
horizontally apply the force 10 times; each force application shall at least maintain 10
s. If the tabletop is evenly loaded to 100 kg and the table would still tip over during the
test, then, the applied force shall be reduced to such an extent that the table does not
tip over; record the actually applied force. During the first and the last loading and
unloading, respectively measure the displacement value (e) of the loading point, as it
is shown in Figure 4 c). Maintain the stopper still; apply force 10 times at part b;
measure the displacement value (e). Use a stopper to surround Leg 2 and Leg 3.
Repeat the above-mentioned test procedures. Respectively test and measure the
the mass of the test piece. In addition, in accordance with the following requirements,
evaluate the test results:
a) Whether parts and components are broken or cracked;
b) Use hands to press certain components that shall be firm to see whether they
are permanently loose;
c) Whether parts and components manifest wear or deformation that would
severely affect the functions of use;
d) Whether hardware connectors become loose;
e) Whether the switch of movable components (including door clamp device) is
