This Standard corresponds to United Nations Economic Commission for Europe ECE R43-2000 “Uniform Provisions Concerning the Approval of Safety Glazing Materials and Their Installation on Vehicles”. This Standard is not equivalent to ECE R43-2000, with the main differences as follows. -- this Standard provides no specifications of plastic safety materials or treated laminated-glass; -- ECE R43 specifies that the laminated-glass windscreens shall meet the test requirements of headform test on a complete windscreen and headform test on flat test pieces at the same time, while this Standard specifies that the laminated- glass windscreens only need to meet the requirements of one of the above- mentioned headform tests; and -- this Standard reduces the burning rate of the fire-resistance test of the glass- plastics composite materials to 100 mm/min. This Standard replaces GB 9656-1996 “Safety Glasses for Road Vehicles (for Certification)”. Compared with GB 9656-1996, the main technical differences are as follows. -- it cancels the interpretation of the specific terms in Chapter 3 and adopts all the terms from relevant automotive glazing terminology standards and automotive terminology standards; -- it cancels the categories of laminated-glass, A and B, which are collectively referred to as laminated-glass; -- it restricts on the use of zone-toughened glass for windscreens; --it increases the glass-plastics composite materials for windscreens and other than windscreens; -- it increases the double safety glazings other than windscreens; -- it allows the use of toughened glass for the windscreens of motor vehicles with a speed per hour lower than 40 km/h; -- it makes the requirements on the quality of the sheet glass for the production of safety glazing materials for road vehicles; -- it increases the tests of resistance to temperature changes, resistance to fire and resistance to chemicals of the glass-plastics composite materials; and Safety Glazing Materials for Road Vehicles 1 Scope This Standard specifies the classifications, technical specifications, test methods, inspection rules and packaging, marking as well as storage of the safety glazing materials for road vehicles. This Standard applies to the safety glazing materials for road vehicles as well as the safety glazing materials for agricultural and other vehicles. 2 Normative References The provisions in following documents become the provisions of this Standard through reference in this Standard. For dated references, the subsequent amendments (excluding corrigendum) or revisions do not apply to this Standard, however, parties who reach an agreement based on this Standard are encouraged to study if the latest versions of these documents are applicable. GB/T 1216 External Micrometer (GB/T 1216-1985, ISO 3611-78, NEQ) GB/T 5137.1 Test Methods of Safety Glazing Materials Used on Road Vehicle – Test Methods for Mechanical Properties (GB/T 5137.1-2002, ISO 3537.1999, MOD) GB/T 5137.2 Test Methods of Safety Glazing Materials Used on Road Vehicle – Test Methods for Optical Properties (GB/T 5137.2-2002, ISO 3538.1997, MOD) GB/T 5137.3 Test Methods of Safety Glazing Materials Used on Road Vehicle – Test Methods for Resistance to Radiation, High Temperature, Humidity, Fire And Simulated Weathering (GB/T 5137.3-2003, ISO 3917.1999, MOD) GB 8410 Flammability of Automotive Interior Materials GB 11614 Float Glass GB/T 17339 Road Vehicles – Safety Glazing Materials – Test Methods for Resistance-to-Chemicals and Resistance-to-Temperature Changes GB/T 18144 Test Method for Measurement of Stress in Glass GB 18045-2000 Safety Glass for Railway Rolling Stock JC/T 512 Packaging of Automobile Safety Glass 3 Classification 3.1 The safety glazing materials are classed into the following categories in accordance with the processing technology. a) laminated glass; b) zone-toughened glass; c) toughened glass; d) double safety glazing; and e) glass-plastics composite material. 3.2 The safety glazing materials are classed into the following categories in accordance with the location of application. 3.2.1 Glazings windscreen (glazings front windscreen). a) laminated glass – applicable to all motor vehicles; b) zone-toughened glass – applicable to trucks (vehicles of category N) which are not for the purpose of carrying passengers; not applicable to passenger cars or coaches which are for the purpose of carrying passengers; c) glass-plastics composite material – applicable to all motor vehicles; and d) toughened glass – applicable to vehicles having a maximum design speed lower than 40 km/h. 3.2.2 Glazings other than windscreens (glazings other than front windscreens). a) laminated glass – applicable to all motor vehicles; b) toughened glass – applicable to all motor vehicles; c) double safety glazing – applicable to all motor vehicles; and d) glass-plastics composite material – applicable to all motor vehicles. Note. Glazings other than windscreens include glazings vehicle doors, corner windows, side windows, rear windows and opening roofs and so on. 4 General Rules 4.1 The sheet glass used for the production of safety glazings for road vehicles shall meet the specifications of automotive glazings of GB 11614. of impact; 3. The interlayer must not be laid bare over an area of mare than 20 cm2; and 4. A tear in the interlayer up to a length of 35 mm is allowed. Glass-plastics composite material 1. The glass layer breaks displaying numerous circular cracks centred approximately on the point of impact, the cracks nearest to the point of impact being not more than 80 mm from it; 2. The layers of glass shall remain adhering to the plastics- material interlayer. One or more partial separation from the interlayer with a distance of less than 4 mm in breadth, on either side of the crack, is permitted outside a circle of 60 mm in diameter centred on the point of impact; and 3. A tear in the interlayer up to a length of 35 mm is allowed. Zone-toughened glass The sample breaks. a The drop height refers to the height from the upper surface of the sample to the lower end of the headform. 5.10.2 Headform test on flat test pieces Conduct tests in accordance with 7.10.2. The headform impact of windscreens and glass panes other than windscreens shall meet the specifications of Table 12.
