Furniture
This is Part 6 of GB 5296, which is formulated according to the requirements of
"Instructions for Use of Products of Consumer Interest - General Principles" (GB
5296.1-1997) and the actual demand of furniture industry in China.
This standard will be implemented from October 1, 2004. The transition period of
implementation for products produced before October 1, 2004 is one year.
Appendix A of this Part is normative.
This Part was proposed by and under the jurisdiction of China National Institute of
Standardization.

Furniture
1 Scope
This Part of GB 5296 specifies the basic requirements, methods and the required contents
for compiling instructions for use of furniture.
This Part is applicable to the compilation of instructions for use for various furniture.
2 Normative References
The following normative documents contain provisions which, through reference in this
Part of GB 5296, become provisions of this Part. For dated reference, subsequent
amendments (excluding corrigendum content) or revisions do not apply to this Part. However,
parties who enter into an agreement according to this standard are encouraged to study
whether the latest edition of these documents can be used. For any undated references, the
latest edition of the quoted normative document applies to this Part.
GB 5296.1-1997 Instructions for Use of Products of Consumer Interest - General
Principles
3 Basic Requirements
3.1 Furniture on sale must have instructions for use (labels, nameplates, instructions for use,
etc.).
3.2 The name of the furniture must reflect the actual attribute of the furniture and comply with
the specifications of corresponding national standards or professional standards. For the
furniture which name is not specified in the national standards and professional standards, the
common name in the furniture industry shall be used.
3.3 The instructions for use must clearly specify the furniture functions and the applicable
environment conditions; and it shall provide the structure, materials, performance, type,

According to the requirements of transport and use, the instructions for use shall be
provided in any of or several of the following ways.
- Printed on the packaging;
-Installed on the furniture in the form of nameplate;
-Accompanied with the furniture in the form of instructions for use or label.
5 Compilation Requirements
5.1 Letters
5.1.1 Instructions for use in Chinese must be provided for the furniture supplied to the
domestic users. As for the instructions for use containing descriptions in Chinese and foreign
language, the headline in Chinese must be striking, highlighted and the descriptions in
Chinese must be placed before the foreign language.
5.1.2 The instructions for use in the official language of sales area must be provided to the
furniture intended for export. If the instructions for use is required in several kinds of
language, each language must be distinguished obviously.
5.1.3 The simplified Chinese characters officially published and implemented by the State
Council must be adopted in the Chinese instructions for use. If required by the customers,
traditional Chinese characters may be used in the instructions for use for furniture sold to
foreign, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan markets.
5.1.4 When the instructions for use is translated into other languages, the translated version
must be accurate. The whole process of translation, including checking, must be completed by
authoritative language experts and technical experts.
5.2 Expression
5.2.1 The expression of instructions for use shall be in the method and procedures which will
help the consumers to understand and grasp the contents correctly and rapidly. For example,
the instructions for use of assembly furniture must ensure the consumers to understand and
grasp assembly in the shortest time.
According to the characteristics and use requirements of the specific furniture, contents
arrangement of instructions for use shall select, add and delete the items from Appendix A,
and shall arrange those items in reasonable sequence.
6 Assessment of Compilation Quality of Instructions for Use
The assessment shall be carried out according to the relevant contents of Appendix A and
requirements of Table A.2 of GB 5296.1-1997.

c) Other maters need to be explained to the uses.
A.14 Name and communication information of the manufacturer
a) Names of the enterprise, name of the manufacturer, name of importing agent and
name of distributor;
b) Address, postal code, phone number, Email etc.
