Shanks for footwear
1 Scope
This Standard specifies product classification, technical requirements, test
methods, inspection rules and marks, packaging, transportation, and storage
for shanks for shoes (including boots).
This Standard is applicable to steel shanks for shoes (including boots) made of
metal materials.
2 Normative references
The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of
this document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated
references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any
amendments) applies.

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions defined in GB/T
2703 apply.
4 Product classification
According to the object of use, it is classified into: male shoe shank, women's
shoe shank, and children's (older) shoe shank.
According to the shape of the steel shank, it is classified into: type I shank, type
L shank and type Y shank.
5 Technical requirements
5.1 Marks
The following shall be marked on the shank:
- Use object: "1" means shank for men's shoes, "2" means shank for
women's shoes and children's shoes;
- Applicable heel height or applicable heel height range, expressed in Arabic
numerals, in millimeters.
Examples:
1/20 (shank for men's shoes, suitable for heel height of 20mm)
2/30~35(shank for women's shoes and children's shoes, suitable for heel height of
30mm~35mm)
5.2 Appearance
The surface of the shank shall be free of burrs and corrosion. The position of
ribs, nail holes and forks shall be straight.
5.3 Size
5.3.1 Size tolerance
The length tolerance of the same batch of shanks is not more than ±2.0mm.
The width tolerance is not more than ±1.0mm. The thickness tolerance is not
more than ±0.2mm.
5.3.2 Lower limit of length
5.3.2.1 See Table 1 for the lower limit of the shank length of men's shoes.
Table 1 -- Lower limit of the shank length of men's shoes
5.3.2.2 See Table 2 for the lower limit of the shank length of women's shoes
and children's (older children) shoes.
5.7 Bending performance
The shank is subject to the 180° bending test. The specimen does not break.
The surface is allowed to have micro cracks.
6 Number of specimens
Take the shanks of the same material, the same specification, and a continuous
production batch as a sampling batch. Randomly select 6 shanks as specimens,
of which 2 shanks are used for the inspection of mark, appearance, size,
longitudinal rigidity, hardness and bending performance, and the other 4 are
inspected for fatigue resistance.
NOTE: The specimens used for longitudinal stiffness inspection and fatigue resistance
inspection cannot be reused.
7 Test methods
7.1 Marks and sensory quality
Inspect visually under normal light.
7.2 Length measurement of steel shank
7.2.1 Length measurement of type I shank
Use a shoe tape ruler with an accuracy of not less than 1mm to get close to the
upper surface of the shank. Measure the longest part of the shank, which shall
be the shank length. The result retains integer digits. The length of each shank
is expressed separately. The length tolerance is the difference between the
maximum value and the minimum value in the measured value of the specimen.
7.2.2 Length measurement of type L shank
Place the shank on the platform as shown in Figure 1. Use a height gauge to
measure and mark the highest point B of the shank. Use a shoe tape ruler with
an accuracy of not less than 1mm to get close to the upper surface of the shank.
Measure the distance from this point to the end of the head of the shank, which
shall be the shank length. The result retains integer digits. The length tolerance
is the difference between the maximum value and the minimum value in the
measured value of the specimen.

7.8.4 Test steps
The schematic diagram of the equipment is shown in Figure 2. The bending
performance test is carried out according to the following steps:
a) Insert the steel shank into the point of support (see 5 in Figure 2), the
center column (see 2 in Figure 2) and the roller (see 8 in Figure 2);
b) Make the upper surface of the middle part of the shank (the long side part
of the type L shank test, except for the corner part) close to the center
column (ϕ10mm) as the point of support to do a 180° bending test;
c) Visually inspect whether the shank is broken. Observe the cracks on its
surface.
8 Inspection rules
8.1 Inspection of shank products
8.1.1 Batching
Products are inspected and accepted in batches. Continuously produced
products of the same model and specification can be used as an inspection lot.
8.1.2 Inspection classification
The product classification is divided into exit-factory inspection and type
inspection.
8.1.3 Exit-factory inspection
Full inspection: marks and appearance. Random inspection: lower limit of
dimension length, longitudinal stiffness, hardness, bending performance.
Optional inspection: dimensional tolerance and fatigue resistance.
8.1.4 Type inspection
When inspecting all items, perform the mark, sensory quality, size, length lower
limit, longitudinal stiffness and hardness test in order. Then select the shank
with the largest hardness for the bending performance test. The other 4 shanks
are tested for fatigue resistance.
In one of the following situations, type inspection shall also be carried out:
a) When there are major changes in product structure, process, and
materials;
b) When the product resumes production after a long-term suspension of
production (three months);
c) When the national quality supervision and inspection agency puts forward
a requirement for type inspection;
d) During normal production, type inspection shall be carried out at least
once every six months.
8.2 Shank inspection in footwear products
When footwear products are spot-checked and submitted for inspection, if the
number of specimens cannot meet the requirements of this Standard, the two
shanks taken from the same pair of shoes shall be used as the specimen to
inspect all items of the shanks. Two pieces are tested for mark, appearance,
size, and hardness. After that, one shank is tested for fatigue resistance, and
one is tested for other items.
8.3 Result judgment
If in each individual test, if one or more shanks fail to meet the requirements of
this Standard, the item will be judged as nonconforming. If one or more of the
inspected items are nonconforming, the batch of products shall be deemed
nonconforming. Among them, marks, lower limit of length, longitudinal stiffness,
hardness, and bending performance are mandatory terms. If 1 item or more is
nonconforming, re-inspection is not allowed, and the batch of products is judged
as nonconforming. Appearance and fatigue resistance are recommended terms.
If 1 item or more is nonconforming, it can be sampled again from the original
batch of products. Double the number of samples. Re-inspect the
nonconforming items. Judgment is based on the results of the re-inspection.
