Foreword
All the technical contents of this part of GB 17927 are mandatory.
GB 17927 “Upholstered furniture - Assessment of the resistance to ignition of
mattress and sofa - Part 1. Smouldering cigarette” has been planned to issue
the follow parts.
- Part 1. Smoldering cigarettes;
- Part 2. Simulated flame of matches;
...
This part is part 1 of GB 17927.
This part was drafted in accordance with the rules given in GB/T 1.1-2009
“Directives for standardization - Part 1. Structure and drafting of standards”.
This part replaces GB 17927-1999 “Upholstered furniture - Assessment of the
resistance to ignition of mattress and sofa - Smouldering cigarette”. As
compared with GB 17927-1999, the main technical changes are as follows.
- MODIFY the scope of application, which is applicable to the assessment of
the resistance to ignition of home mattresses and sofas (Chapter 1 of 1999
version; Chapter 1 of this version);
- ADD and MODIFY some definitions. ADD the definition of progressive
smouldering, flaming, ignition, mattress, upholstered furniture unit, and sofa
(2.1, 2.2, 2.5, 2.7, 2.8, 2.9 of this version); MODIFY the definition of
resistance to ignition in the original standard (2.4 of 1999 version; 2.6 of
this version); DELETE the definition of ignition hazard (2.3 of 1999 version);
- MODIFY the test part of the upholstered furniture of the original standard;
respectively SPECIFY the test part of mattress and sofa (8.1.2 of 1999
version; 8.3 of this version);
- MODIFY the pretreatment environment of the test specimen before the test
(7.1 of the 1989 version; 7.1 of this version); and SPECIFY the time after
pretreatment until to the start of test;
- MODIFY the test environment (7.3 of 1999 version; 7.2 of this version);
- MODIFY the “assessment of resistance to ignition” (8.1.4 of 1999 version;
8.6 of this version);
Upholstered furniture - Assessment of the resistance
to ignition of mattress and sofa –
Part 1. Smouldering cigarette
1 Scope
This part of GB 17927 specifies the test methods and assessment rules for the
resistance to ignition of upholstered furniture against the ignition source of
smouldering cigarettes.
This part is applicable to the test and assessment for the resistance to ignition
of the household mattress, sofas and other upholstered furniture; AND the test
and assessment of the resistance to ignition of the upholstered furniture unit
can make reference to this part.
2 Terms and definitions
The following terms and definitions apply to this document.
2.1
Progressive smouldering
It refers to an exothermic oxidation reaction without flame, which will spread
on its own after taking off the ignition source, AND sometimes is
accompanied with incandescing or lighting phenomenon.
2.2
Flaming
It refers to the gaseous combustion process accompanied by luminescence.
2.3
Afterflame
It refers to the continuous flaming of the test specimen after being moved
away from the ignition source under the specified test conditions.
2.4
Afterglow
It refers to the progressive smouldering of the test specimen after removing
the ignition source or terminating flaming under the specified test conditions.
2.5
Ignition
It refers to the progressive smouldering or flaming phenomenon of the test
specimen under the effect of ignition source.
2.6
Resistance to ignition
It refers to the characteristics of the test specimen of difficult to be ignited
under the effect of ignition source.
2.7
Mattress
It refers to the soft bedding which uses the elastic material or other materials
as the core material AND is covered with textile fabrics or other materials.
2.8
Upholstered furniture unit
It refers to the member or component which is made by wrapping the elastic
material or other soft filler materials in the textile fabrics, natural leather, and
artificial leather and so on.
2.9
Sofa
It refers to the flexible seat made from soft materials, wood or metal materials,
AND with backrest.
3 Ignition criteria
3.1 Smouldering ignition
In this part, the following conditions are considered as smouldering ignitions.
a) The test specimen has a gradual increase in the smouldering
characteristics, so continuing test will endanger safety AND it is necessary
to take effective fire suppression measures;
7 Pretreatment and test environment
7.1 Preconditioning environment
Temperature (2 3.0 ± 2.0) °C, relative humidity 50.0% ± 5.0%;
The pretreatment time for cigare...
