Ship equipment environmental test and engineering
guidance - Tilt and sway
[Translator’s note. lateral tilt = swaying; longitudinal tilt = surging; lateral sway = rolling;
longitudinal sway = pitching]
1 Subject content and application scope
This Standard specifies the test conditions, severity level, interruption treatment for
testing, test procedure, and qualification criteria; it also provides the relevant work
guidance.
This Standard applies to evaluating the ship equipment environmental test of working
adaptability and structure integrity under the specified conditions of tilt and sway.
2 Normative references

sway test
3 Test conditions
3.1 Sway test bench
When the tilt test is done on the tilt test bench, the test bench shall stably stay at the
specified place under the maximum test load, it must not occur obvious waggle and
drift.
At least, the tilt test bench shall be able to simulate a form of ship’s tilt, which generally
is lateral-sway and (or) longitudinal-sway. The amplitude and period of tilt shall be
able to be adjusted casually and meet the following requirements.
a. the waveform of tilt shall be the continuously smooth sine wave; the distortion
of waveform shall be less than 15%;
b. the tolerance of tilt amplitude is ± 5%;
c. the tolerance of tilt period is ± 5%.

provisions of relevant standard or technical documents.
5.4 Final detection
Detect the sample’s appearance, mechanical, and electrical properties according to
the provisions of relevant standard or technical documents.
6 Interruption treatment for testing
When there is interruption during testing, if there is no other provision, the treatment
shall generally be done according to provision 4.6 in CB 1146.1. If using other method,
it shall be declared in the test report.
7 Qualification criteria
7.1 After the sample is test for tilt and sway, if there is one of the following conditions,
it is deemed as unqualified.
a. the structure is jammed or destroyed;
b. the temperature rising of the bearing is over allowable value;
c. malfunction or faulty contact or sluggish;
d. deviation value of performance parameter index is beyond the allowable
limitation of product standard or technical documents;
e. other criteria that are specified by the product standard or technical documents.
7.2 For other problems of the sample, if there are not rules specified in the product
standard or technical documents, the chief testing engineer shall determine.
8 Test record and documents
The test documentation shall comfort to the relevant provisions of Chapter 8 in CB
1146.1.

Engineering guidance of ship equipment tilt and sway environmental test
A1 Introduction
The tilt environment stated in this Standard, including longitudinal tilt and lateral tilt, is
generally resulted from the marine casualty, controlling, unevenly loading and wind.
The sway environment stated in this Standard, including longitudinal sway, lateral
sway, yawing, and their mutual coupling movement, is generally resulted from the
external force such as wind, wave and so on.
Tilt and sway are a kind of basic environment that is withstood by all equipment
installed on ship. The purpose of this Standard is to provide a method that can
simulate that, in laboratory, the product is effected by tilt and sway environment, rather
than reappearing the real tilt and sway environment.
A2 Environmental effects
Tilt and sway will affect some properties of ship equipment. The main influences are
as following.
a. the destroy of the balance for the original forces in the equipment system;
b. the change of bearing’s stress conditions;
c. the deterioration of bearing’s lubricating conditions;
d. the malfunction that is resulted from the change of internal free surface place;
e. leakage of internal liquid.
A3 Determination of test procedure
Install the sample on the test bench directly or through the installing shelf; according
to relevant standard or technical documents, the sample shall be in specified state;
exert the test conditions after it is stable. If there is no special provision, the procedure
of tilt and sway test shall be generally – tilt test, then sway test; longitudinal test, then
lateral test. For the ship equipment that requires to do tilt and sway comprehensive
test, the sub-item test of tilt and sway may be exempted.
