Foreword
This Standard modifies the International Union of Leather Technologists and
Chemists Societies (IULTCS) standard IUP 48 “Measurement of abrasion
resistance of automotive leather”, which has been transformed by the
International Standardization Organization (ISO) to ISO/NP 17076.2004
“Leather - Physical and mechanical tests - Determination of abrasion resistance
of automotive leather”.
According to the actual situation in China, this Standard has undergone the
following technical changes when adopting the UP 48 standard.
- DELETE the word “automotive” in the standard name and scope, to expand
the scope of application of the standard;
- In “Normative references”, CHANGE the originally referenced UP
standards TO relevant standards of China;
- DELETE the explanatory “NOTE” in “3 Principles”;
- CHANGE the explanatory description in 4.6 TO “NOTE”;
- In order to prevent incorrect understanding of the standard in use, DELETE
the reference “NOTE” in 5.2 of the original standard;
- For ease of use, ADD the commonly used number of revolutions for test in
6.2.4;
- DELETE Annex A (Instrument source).
This Standard has also undergone the following editorial changes.
- DELETE the foreword of the UP standard;
- CHANGE the word “this IULTCS standard” TO “this Standard”;
- REPLACE the comma “,” used as decimal point WITH the decimal point “.”.

1 Scope
This Standard specifies the test method for the abrasion resistance of leather.
This standard applies to all kinds of leather that require abrasion resistance.
2 Normative references
The following documents contain the provisions which, through reference in this
Standard, become the provisions of this Standard. For dated references, their
subsequent amendments (excluding corrigendum) or revisions do not apply to
this Standard. However, the parties who enter into agreement based on this
Standard are encouraged to investigate whether the latest versions of these
documents are applicable. For undated reference documents, the latest
versions apply to this Standard.
GB 250-1995 Gray scale for assessing change in colour (idt ISO 105/A 02)
QB/T 2706 Leather - Chemical, physical and mechanical and fastness tests
- Sampling location
3 Principle
The sample is rotated on a horizontal platform. Two abrasive wheels are
pressed against the sample with a certain force.
4 Equipment
4.1 Sample platform, rotates horizontally, with a speed of (60 ± 5) r/min.
4.2 Sample holder, flat, circular, removable.
4.5 Counter, indicating the number of revolutions of the sample platform.
4.6 Abrasive wheels, tungsten-carbide wheel or rubber wheel, width (12.7 ± 0.1)
mm, maximum diameter 51.7 mm, minimum diameter 44.0 mm. The diameter
of the abrasive wheel shall be of the same during the test, and the diameter of
the abrasive wheel shall be recorded in the test report.
4.8 Sample mounting sheet, the minimum thickness is 1.0 mm, with an
adhesive when necessary, to keep the sample rigid and flat.
4.9 Vacuum cleaner, with a suitable interface to connect to the vacuum suction
nozzle (4.4).
4.10 Abrasive paper, silicon carbide, grade E 150.
4.11 Soft brush, or compressed air.
4.12 Brush, stiff bristle brush.
4.13 Gray scale, complying with GB 250-1995.
5 Sampling and sample preparation
5.1 Sampling
CARRY OUT according to the provisions of QB/T 2706.
5.3 Air conditioning of sample
CARRY OUT according to the provisions of QB/T 2707.
6 Procedure
6.1 Preparation of new abrasive wheels
new tungsten-carbide abrasive wheels.
6.2 Abrasion of sample
6.2.1 FIT the prepared new abrasive wheels (6.1) or the adjusted abrasive
wheels (6.3) to the pivoted arm (4.3), FIT them correctly, with the labels facing
outward.
6.2.2 SELECT the appropriate weight (4.7). 250 g, 500 g, or 100 g.
NOTE. The commonly used weight is 500 g, but the car manufacturer can specify the weight,
and the weight used shall be recorded in the test report.
6.2.3 FIT the sample on the sample holder.
6.2.4 PLACE the abrasive wheels onto the surface of the sample, TURN ON
the vacuum cleaner, SWITCH ON the machine, and operate with the specified
number of revolutions. It may choose from the following number of revolutions.
100, 250, 500, 1000, 2500, 5000.
6.2.6 REPLACE the sample, REPEAT 6.2.5, and CONTINUE the next test.
6.2.7 REPEAT 6.2.6, and CARRY OUT the test with the number of revolutions
specified in 6.2.4.
6.3 Adjustment of abrasive wheels
6.3.1 ADJUST the rubber abrasive wheels according to 6.3.2 ~ 6.3.7.ADJUST
the tungsten-carbide abrasive wheels according to 6.3.8.
6.3.2 ADJUST the rubber abrasive wheels after each test.
6.3.3 ADD weights according to the provisions of 4.7, to make the weight of the
abrasive wheels be 1000 g.
6.3.4 PLACE the abrasive paper (4.10) on the sample holder.
6.3.8 USE a stiff brush (4.12) to remove the debris on the tungsten-carbide
abrasive wheels, and USE a piece of abrasive paper (4.10) to remove the burrs
on the edge of the abrasive wheels.
7 Test report
The test report shall include the following.

5 Sampling and sample preparation
5.1 Sampling
CARRY OUT according to the provisions of QB/T 2706.
5.3 Air conditioning of sample
CARRY OUT according to the provisions of QB/T 2707.
6 Procedure
6.1 Preparation of new abrasive wheels
new tungsten-carbide abrasive wheels.
6.2 Abrasion of sample
6.2.1 FIT the prepared new abrasive wheels (6.1) or the adjusted abrasive
wheels (6.3) to the pivoted arm (4.3), FIT them correctly, with the labels facing
outward.
6.2.2 SELECT the appropriate weight (4.7). 250 g, 500 g, or 100 g.
NOTE. The commonly used weight is 500 g, but the car manufacturer can specify the weight,
and the weight used shall be recorded in the test report.
6.2.3 FIT the sample on the sample holder.
6.2.4 PLACE the abrasive wheels onto the surface of the sample, TURN ON

6.3.1 ADJUST the rubber abrasive wheels according to 6.3.2 ~ 6.3.7.ADJUST
the tungsten-carbide abrasive wheels according to 6.3.8.
6.3.2 ADJUST the rubber abrasive wheels after each test.
6.3.3 ADD weights according to the provisions of 4.7, to make the weight of the
abrasive wheels be 1000 g.
6.3.4 PLACE the abrasive paper (4.10) on the sample holder.
6.3.8 USE a stiff brush (4.12) to remove the debris on the tungsten-carbide
abrasive wheels, and USE a piece of abrasive paper (4.10) to remove the burrs
on the edge of the abrasive wheels.
