3 Terms and Definitions

3.1 water requirement of standard consistency When neat cement paste reaches the standard consistency state, the percentage of water used for mixing the neat paste as a percentage of cement mass. 3.2 setting time When the cement paste reaches the standard consistency condition, the time required from the addition of cement to the sinking of the test needle into the paste to a certain depth. NOTE. it includes initial setting time and final setting time. 3.3 soundness The capability of neat cement paste to maintain a stable volume after hardening. NOTE. it is characterized by the Le Chatelier method or the test cake method.

4 Principle

4.1 Standard Consistency of Cement The neat cement paste with the standard consistency has a certain resistance to the sinking of the standard test rod (or test cone). When a metal test rod (test rod method) or test cone (test cone method) is used to sink into neat cement pastes with different water contents, and the test rod or test cone can stay in the specified equilibrium position, the water content is the water requirement of standard consistency, and the neat paste is the standard consistency cement paste. 4.2 Boiling Soundness 4.2.1 Le Chatelier method The relative displacement of the test needle after boiling the neat cement paste with standard consistency in the Le Chatelier is determined to characterize the degree of volume expansion. 4.2.2 Test cake method The change state of the test cakes of neat cement paste with standard consistency after boiling is observed to characterize the volume soundness.

5 Instruments and Equipment

5.1 Cement Paste Mixer Meet the requirements of JC/T 729. 5.2 Neat Cement Paste Standard Consistency and Setting Time Tester 5.2.1 Cement standard consistency and setting time tester The cement standard consistency and setting time tester is also called “Vicat apparatus”, which shall meet the requirements of JC/T 727.The total mass of the sliding part is 300 g  1 g. The surface of the sliding rod connected to the test rod and the test needle shall be smooth and can fall freely by gravity. There shall be no tightness or looseness, as shown in Figure 1a) and Figure

8 Determination Method for Water Requirement of Standard

Consistency - Test Rod Method (reference method) 8.1 Preparation before the Test 8.1.1 The sliding rod of the Vicat apparatus can freely slide. Wipe the test mold and the glass bottom plate with a wet cloth and place the test mold on the glass bottom plate. 8.1.2 Make adjustments, so that the pointer points at the reference point when the test rod contacts the glass plate. 8.1.3 The mixer normally operates. 8.2 Mixing of Neat Cement Paste Use neat cement paste mixer for mixing. First, use a wet cloth to wipe the mixing pot and mixing blades. Measure-take or weigh-take a certain amount of mixing water, accurate to 0.5 mL or 0.5 g, and pour it into the mixing pot. Then, within 5 s ~ 10 s, carefully add the weighed 500g  1 g of cement into the water, and prevent water and cement from splashing out. When mixing, first place the pot on the pot base of the mixer, raise it to the mixing position, start the mixer, stir at a low speed for 120 s, stop for 15 s; when stopping mixing, scrape the cement paste on the blades and pot wall into the middle of the pot, and then, stir at a high speed for 120 s and stop. 8.3 Determination Steps of Water Requirement of Standard Consistency After mixing is completed, immediately take an appropriate amount of neat cement paste and put it into the test mold placed on the glass bottom plate at one time. Use a straight-edge knife with a width of about 25 mm to cut a circle between the neat paste and the inner wall of the test mold, then, lift the glass plate and gently vibrate it on the rubber pad for no more than 5 times. Avoid water seepage during vibration. Then, at about 2/3 of the upper surface of the test mold, slightly tilt it to the test mold surface; respectively and gently saw off the excess neat paste outwards, and then, from the edge of the test mold perpendicular to the saw direction, gently wipe the top of the test mold once. During the operation of sawing off the excess neat paste and screeding, the neat paste shall not be compacted. After screeding, quickly move the test mold and the glass bottom plate to the base of the Vicat apparatus, so that the test rod is located in the center of the test mold surface. Lower the test rod, until it contacts the surface of the neat cement paste, tighten the screws for 1 s ~ 2 s, and then, suddenly release it to allow the test rod to vertically and freely sink into the neat cement paste. When the test rod stops sinking or when the test cone is released for 30 s, record the distance between the test rod and the bottom plate. After raising the test rod, immediately wipe it clean. The entire operation shall be completed within 1 minute after mixing. The neat paste with the standard consistency is when the test rod sinks into the neat paste and is 6 mm  1 mm away from the glass bottom plate. The percentage of mixing water to cement mass is the water requirement of standard consistency (P) of the cement.

9 Determination Method for Water Requirement of Standard

Consistency - Test Cone Method (substitute method) 9.1 Preparation before the Test 9.1.1 The metal rod of the Vicat apparatus can freely slide. 9.1.2 Make adjustments, so that the pointer points at the zero point when the test cone contacts the top surface of the cone mold. 9.1.3 The mixer normally operates. 9.2 Mixing of Neat Cement Paste In accordance with 8.2, mix the neat cement paste. 9.3 Determination of Standard Consistency 9.3.1 The water requirement of standard consistency of cement can be determined by the substitute method using either the adjusted water amount method or the unchanged water amount method. When the adjusted water amount method is used, the mixing water amount is determined by experience, and when the unchanged water amount method is used, the mixing water amount is 142.5 mL. 9.3.2 After the mixing is completed, immediately put the mixed neat cement paste into the cone mold, use a table knife to gently poke the surface of the paste for 5 times, and then, gently vibrate it on the rubber pad for 5 times and scrape off the excess neat paste; after screeding, quickly put it in a fixed position under the test cone, lower the test cone to the surface of the neat paste, tighten the screw for 1 s ~ 2 s, and suddenly release it to let the test cone vertically and freely sink into the neat cement paste. When the test cone stops sinking or when the test cone is released for 30 s, record the sinking depth of the test cone. The entire operation shall be completed within 1 min after mixing. 9.3.3 When the adjusted water amount method is used for determination, the neat paste when the test cone sinks to a depth of 30 mm  1 mm is the neat paste with the standard consistency. The mixing water volume is the water requirement of standard consistency of the cement, which is calculated as a percentage of the cement mass. If the sinking depth exceeds the range, another specimen needs to be weighed, the water volume adjusted, and the test repeated, until it reaches 30 mm  1 mm. 9.3.4 When the unchanged water amount method is used for determination, the water requirement of standard consistency is calculated in accordance with the empirical formula (1) or the corresponding scale on the instrument. When the sinking depth of the test cone is less diameter end facing upward and the small end facing downward, place it on the glass plate, and then, put it in the moisture curing box for further curing. Use the final setting needle [see Figure 1e)] for determination. When the final setting time is approaching, carry out the determination once every 15 minutes (or shorter). During each determination, the test needle shall not fall into the original needle hole. When the final setting needle sinks into the test body by 0.5 mm, that is, the ring fitting begins to leave no trace on the test body and the initial setting needle sinks to a depth of no more than 1 mm on the small diameter end face of the test body, the cement reaches the final setting state. When the neat paste reaches the final setting, the determination shall be immediately repeated. Only when the results reach the final setting state twice can it be determined that the neat paste is the final setting at this time. 10.5 Determination Precautions During the determination, pay attention to. a) During the initial determination, the metal column shall be gently supported to allow it to slowly descend to prevent the test needle from bending by collision, but the result is based on free fall; b) After each test is completed, the test needle shall be wiped clean and the test mold shall be brought back to the moisture curing box. During the entire test process, the test mold shall be prevented from vibration; c) When the neat cement paste has abnormal setting, the water requirement of standard consistency and setting time can still be determined in accordance with the operating steps specified in this document, and this shall be indicated in the report. 11 Determination Method for Soundness - Le Chatelier Method (reference method) 11.1 Preparation before the Test Each specimen needs to be formed into two test pieces, and each Le Chatelier needs to be equipped with two glass plates with a side length or diameter of about 80 mm, a thickness of 4 mm ~ 5 mm, and a mass of about 75 g. All glass plates in contact with the neat cement paste and the inner surface of the Le Chatelier shall be coated with a thin layer of mineral oil. 11.2 Forming and Curing of Le Chatelier Test Pieces 11.2.1 Place the prepared Le Chatelier on the glass plate and immediately fill the Le Chatelier with the prepared standard consistency neat paste at one time. When filling the neat paste, it is advisable to use the Le Chatelier fixing device or use one hand to gently support the Le Chatelier, and the other hand to use a knife to gently poke the surface of the paste for 3 times, and then, perform screeding. 11.2.2 Cover the glass plate and move the test pieces to the moisture curing box for curing. 11.2.3 During the moisture curing period, if the Le Chatelier test pieces are observed to be abnormal, terminate the test, and the cement soundness is judged to be disqualified. 11.3 Boiling 11.3.1 Adjust the water level in the boiling box. During the entire boiling process, the water level is always higher than the test piece. 11.3.2 After 24 h  2 h from the time of adding water to cement, remove the glass plate of the Le Chatelier test pieces, and first, use the Le Chatelier expansion tester to measure the distance between the Le Chatelier pointer tips (A) with an accuracy of 0.5 mm. 11.3.3 Place the test pieces on the test piece rack in the water of the boiling box, with the pointer facing upward, then, within 30 min  5 min, heat to boiling, and keep boiling for 180 min  5 min. 11.3.4 After boiling is completely, immediately drain the hot water in the boiling box, open the box cover, wait for the box to cool to room temperature, and take out the test pieces. Use the Le Chatelier expansion tester to measure the distance between the Le Chatelier pointer tips after boiling (C) with an accuracy of 0.5 mm. 11.4 Determination of Boiling Soundness Take the average value of the increased distance (C  A) between the pointer tips of the two test pieces after boiling for result determination. The average value is rounded to one decimal place. When the average value is not greater than 5.0 mm, and the difference in the increased distance between the pointer tips of the two test pieces is less than 3.0 mm, the cement soundness is determined to be qualified. Otherwise, the same sample shall be immediately subject to a repeated test by the Le Chatelier method and the test cake method. If the result of any method is disqualified, the cement soundness is determined to be disqualified.

12 Determination Method for Soundness - Test Cake Method

(substitute method) 12.1 Preparation before the Test Two glass plates with a side length of about 100 mm are required for each sample. All glass plates in contact with the neat cement paste shall be lightly coated with a layer of mineral oil. 12.2 Forming and Curing of Test Cakes Take out a part of the prepared standard consistency neat paste and divide it into two equal parts, make them into balls, put them on the prepared glass plate, gently vibrate the glass plate and use a knife wiped with a wet cloth to wipe it from the edge to the center to make test cakes with ......
