Petroleum Solvents for Paints and Cleaning
1 Scope
This Standard specifies the requirements and test methods, sampling, marking,
packaging, transportation and storage of the 5 solvent oils usually composed of
petroleum distillates.
The products specified in this Standard are mainly used for paint solvents (or diluents),
dry cleaning solvents, cleaning agents for metal parts. See Appendix B for the intended
use of the various solvent oils.
2 Normative References
The provisions in following documents become the provisions of this Standard through

3 Classification of Products
This Standard divides the solvent oil for paint and cleaning into 5 designations
according to the distillation range of the product:
No.1 – Medium boiling point;
No.2 – High boiling point and low dry point;
No.3 – High boiling point;
No.4 – High boiling point and high flash point;
No.5 – Kerosene type.
The solvent oil with high boiling point is further divided into 3 types according to the
aromatics content:
Ordinary type – aromatic content (volume fraction) 8%~22%;
Medium aromatic type – aromatic content (volume fraction) 2%~8%;
Low aromatic type – aromatic content (volume fraction) 0%~2%.
The medium boiling point and kerosene type are divided into two types, such as
medium aromatic type and low aromatic type.
4 Product Identification
The identifications of solvent oil products for paint and cleaning are as follows:
+ +
For instance: No.3 ordinary type solvent oil for paint and cleaning.
5 Requirements and Test Methods
The technical requirements and test methods of solvent oil for paint and cleaning can
refer to Table 1.
6 Sampling
It shall be performed as per GB/T 4756; take 3L of sample for inspection and later-user.

Intended Uses of Various Solvent Oils
B.1 Intended use
Various solvent oils specified in this Standard can be used as paint solvents (or
diluents). The medium-aromatic and low-aromatic types of solvents can also be used
as the cleaning agents (degreasing agents) for the coated and uncoated metal parts;
however, the compatibility between the coating and solvent oil shall be checked before
use.
B.1.1 No.1 (medium boiling point) products are mainly used as quick-drying paint
solvents (or diluents). It can also be used as the woolen wool degreasing agents and
cleaning agents for precision instrument. Its use is characterized by short drying time
and fast volatilization rate.
B.1.2 No.2 (high boiling point and low drying point) products can be used as paint
solvents (or diluents), and dry-cleaning agents. When it is used for dry-cleaning and
cleaning, it is not easy to leave traces on the washing.
B.1.3 No.3 (High boiling point) products are mainly used as the paint solvents (diluents)
and dry-cleaning agents. When it is used as paint solvents (or diluents), it has a slower
evaporation rate and stronger dissolving ability than No.1 products. It is also widely
used for cleaning the metal surface.
B.1.4 No.4 (High boiling point and high flash point) products is used in places where
working environment requires high flash points for paint, degreasing agents, dry-
cleaning agents.
B.1.5 No.5 (kerosene type) is suitable for the degreasing solvents of the metal surface.
It has the characteristics of low volatility, high flash pint, small environmental pollution,
and easy recycling. It is especially suitable for removing the rust-proof grease form the
bearings and metal parts.
B.2 Dangerous tips of solvent oil
Various solvent oils specified in this Standard have different levels of volatility and are
flammable and explosive dangerous goods. The container must be sealed, away from
the heat and fire, and avoid directly exposing to the sunlight. When using indoors,
sufficient ventilation must be ensured to prevent vapors from accumulating to reach
the explosive limits. Avoid prolonged inhalation of its vapors and avoid prolonged or
