Foreword

This document was drafted in accordance with the provisions of GB/T 1.1-2020 “Directives for standardization - Part 1.Rules for the structure and drafting of standardizing documents”. This document replaces GB 15365-2008 “Symbols for controls, indicators and telltales for motorcycles and mopeds”. Compared with GB 15365-2008, in addition to structural adjustments and editorial changes, the main technical changes are as follows. - MODIFY the definition of “control”, clarify it as a manually operated component (see 3.1 of this document, 2.1 of the 2008 edition); - MODIFY the definition of “indicator”, delete the form of representation (see 3.2 of this document, 2.2 of the 2008 edition); - MODIFY the definition of “tell-tale”, delete the audible signal (see 3.3 of this document, 2.3 of the 2008 edition); - ADD the terms “symbol” and “common space” and their definitions (see 3.4 and 3.5 of this document); - ADD the requirement that multi-function devices be allowed to share one symbol when combined (see 4.1.2 of this document); - ADD the requirement for common spaces used to display multiple types of information (see 4.1.3 of this document); - ADD the requirement that the symbols specified in this document be explained in the instruction manual (see 4.1.5 of this document); - MODIFY the position and display requirements for symbols for indicators and tell- tales (see 4.2 of this document, 3.1 of the 2008 edition); - ADD the requirement for the color used for system heating/cooling (see 4.3.3 of this document); - ADD the symbols corresponding to daytime running lights (see Table 1, No. 09 of this document), windshield washer (see Table 1, No. 16 of this document), automatic idle start-stop operation (see Table 1, No. 17 of this document), tire pressure alarm (see Table 1, No. 18 of this document), engine failure (see Table 1, No. 19 of this document), power battery failure (see Table 1, No. 31 of this document), power battery low charge warning (see Table 1, No. 33 of this document), and drive motor failure (see Table 1, No. 36 of this document); - MODIFY the meaning of the symbol for starting battery status (see Table 1, No. 30 of this document, 4.16 of the 2008 edition), and MODIFY the symbol and color of Symbols for controls, indicators and tell-tales for motorcycles and mopeds

1 Scope

This document specifies the general requirements, position requirements and color requirements for symbols for controls, indicators and tell-tales for motorcycles and mopeds. This document applies to indicators and tell-tales on the instrument panel, and controls located near the driver mounted on motorcycles and mopeds (hereinafter referred to as “motorcycles”).

3 Terms and definitions

For the purpose of this document, the following terms and definitions apply. 3.1 control A component manually operated by the driver to change the operating status or function of a device on a motorcycle. 3.2 indicator A device that displays the function or operating status of a motorcycle or its components. NOTE. This may include scale values, digital displays, etc. 3.3 tell-tale A light signal that, when illuminated, indicates the activation of a device on a motorcycle, or the normal or inoperative function of a motorcycle or its components, or a functional malfunction. 3.4 symbol A visual graphic used to identify controls, indicators and tell-tales. 3.5 common space An area where two or more corresponding symbols for indicators or tell-tales or other information may be displayed asynchronously.

4 Requirements

4.1 General requirements 4.1.1 Symbols for controls and tell-tales shall have a clear contrast with the background color to ensure visibility. The coating (plating) shall be permanently durable and shall not be easily removed by fingers. 4.1.2 When controls, indicators or tell-tales with the same function are combined, they may share one symbol. 4.1.3 Common spaces used to display multiple information shall meet the following requirements. a) When two or more tell-tales are activated, the information shall be automatically repeated in sequence, or the driver may select which information to view; b) Tell-tales indicating anti-lock braking system failure, high beam or turn signal lights shall not be displayed in a same common space; c) If any of the tell-tales indicating anti-lock braking system failure, high beam or turn signal lights are displayed in a common space, their activation sequence shall take precedence over any other information; d) Once activated, the anti-lock braking system failure, high beam, turn signal lights, and other red tell-tales listed in Table 1 shall not be automatically deactivated; e) Unless otherwise specified in a specific (other) standard, there are no color requirements for tell-tales when they appear in a common space. 4.1.4 If a motorcycle is equipped with controls, indicators and tell-tales other than those listed in Clause 5, the corresponding symbols may not be displayed. 4.1.5 If a motorcycle is equipped with controls, indicators and tell-tales specified in Clause 5, the corresponding symbols shall be explained in the motorcycle’s instruction manual. 4.1.6 Except during system self-tests, tell-tales shall illuminate only when activated. 4.1.7 Tell-tale functions are allowed to be provided through a combined instrument lighting. 4.2 Position requirements 4.2.1 It shall be ensured that the driver can identify the symbols for indicators and tell- tales shown in Clause 5 in the normal driving position. When an indicator or tell-tale is inactive, the corresponding symbol may not be displayed. 4.2.2 Symbols shall be placed on or adjacent to the corresponding controls, indicators and tell-tales. If this is not possible, a short solid line shall be drawn between the symbol and the corresponding control, indicator or tell-tale to indicate the connection. 4.3 Color requirements 4.3.1 Tell-tales shall use the following colors. a) Red indicates hazard, such as vehicle system failure, charging status, equipment failure, or impending failure; b) Yellow (or amber) indicates warnings or other conditions that may pose a long- term potentially hazard; c) Green indicates safety and normal operation. NOTE. Except for the blue specified in Table 1. 4.3.2 The color of each symbol used to identify controls, indicators and tell-tales shall be clearly distinguishable against the background. 4.3.3 For devices or systems that have temperature adjustment functions, the relevant symbols representing temperature, hot and cold shall be red to indicate high temperature or hot, and blue to indicate low temperature or cold.

5 Symbols for controls, indicators and tell-tales
